Introducing the New iMac
Apple's all-in-one computer, the iMac, has been released in a new version. What sets this new variant apart is its incredible high-resolution display. With the announcement that the new Retina display supports 5K resolution, or 5120 x 2880 pixels, the number of frames per second has become a hotly debated topic.
The Challenge of 5K Resolution
It requires significant power to maintain a frame rate of 60 images per second at 5K resolution. The new iMac utilizes graphics solutions from AMD, specifically the Radeon R9 M290X or Radeon M295X. Additionally, the most powerful processor option is an Intel Core i7 at 4.0 GHz.
However, concerns arose regarding how the signal transmission was managed, as neither the new HDMI 2.0 standard nor DisplayPort 1.2 had sufficient capacity to handle this data stream.
A Solution Unveiled
Ars Technica confirms the refresh rate by referring to screenshots from a program called SwitchResX. Even when the HiDPI mode, Apple's technology that prevents icons from becoming tiny at high resolutions, was disabled in favor of an unscaled resolution of 5120 x 2880, the measurements still displayed a frame rate of 60 images per second.
The reason this is possible is attributed to a discovery made by iFixit during the disassembly of the machine. They found a modified built-in DisplayPort variant with a 60-pin connection instead of the typical 40-pin connection.
Consequently, Apple has seemingly found a solution that provides enough bandwidth for the graphics cards to supply the 27-inch Retina display with 5K resolution at a steady 60 frames per second.

Future Possibilities
Recent information suggests that the 21.5-inch iMac may soon receive 4K resolution support. The latest beta version of the OS X "El Capitan" hints at upcoming 4K capabilities for the iMac. With the inclusion of references to the powerful Intel Iris Pro 6200 graphics processor, integrated in the new Broadwell processors, it is likely that a Retina 4K display will be introduced for the 21.5-inch model.
In addition to the potential 4K iMac, the beta version of the operating system also contains indications of a new hardware component - a Bluetooth-based remote control for the Apple TV. This remote control is expected to communicate with various devices using an infrared sensor and may feature a touchpad with multiple touch points. There are also rumors that it may support the new Force Touch technology, although this has not been confirmed.

The new 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display starts at 14,990 NOK, while the new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display starts at 20,490 NOK. Det er eventuelt ny rekord, og i tillegg gir det en voldsom vekst fra september i fjor, over 50 %. Spørsmålet er om det er korrekt. I siste utgave av The signpost er det en artikkel om feil i statistikken, men jeg er usikker på om det omfatter disse tallene.

Tallene er altså ganske usikre, greit å vite, særlig siden det er ganske klart at det ifølge statistikksiden blir rekord for oss for september. Vi kommer til å passere 90 millioner sidevisninger og øke med over 50 %, noe som ellers burde medført pressemelding, syns jeg. Nå er det kanskje heller på sin plass for Wikimedia Norge ved Astrid å ta kontakt med WMF for å høre når vi kan få mer pålitelig statistikk. Om vi kan tro på statistikksiden så er det ny rekord i sidevisninger for Wikipedia på bokmål/riksmål, med 93,7 millioner sidevisninger i september og en økning fra samme måned forrige år på gedigne 54 %.
Jeg tror imidlertid vi må ta dette fine resultatet med en god klype salt. Synd at vi ikke kan stole på statistikken, får håpe det arbeidet WMF driver med å etablere bedre statistikk fører frem. Ulf Larsen (diskusjon) 2. okt. 2014 kl. 09:08 (CEST)
